The capacity of the existing Krabbegatsluis lock, in the dyke between the cities of Enkhuizen and Lelystad, is seriously inadequate, especially during the summer. Both boats and cars experience long waiting times, owing to the frequent opening and closing of the drawbridge on which road traffic presently crosses the lock. To expand the capacity, a new lock complex is being built further to the east.
